What Causes Acne?

Acne is a long-term skin condition generally associated with breakouts of whiteheads, pimples & greasy skin and in some severe cases can lead to scarring. Whilst acne is a treatable skin condition not all treatments are as successful as others.

HORMONES: Puberty, premenstrual flare, disorders with high testosterone levels, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, anabolic steroids and oral steroids.

OILS: Contact with the skin through occupation or cosmetics.

STRESS: Increase in sebum glands activity during period of stress

Why Do I Have Acne?

A degree of acne affects nearly everyone between ages of 15-17 and it has been well documented that genetics have a prominent role too.

  • 15-20% of young people will experience moderate-severe acne
  • 85% prevalence rate in 12-24 year age group
  • 78% of girls between 8-12 have acne
  • 64% of 20-29 and 43% of 30-39 have visible acne
  • 3% of men and 5% of women with still had a degree of acne aged 40-49

Myths Around Acne

Since 2005, studies have shown “no robust evidence that acne is caused or worsened by a lack of hygiene.”

There may be a possible link between dairy intake and acne however more studies are needed to prove this.

There are no proven links between acne and the intake of:

  • Chocolate
  • Fat
  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Vitamin
  • High number of calories
